Okay, as some of you may already know, DC is planning to release a 2.8L direct-injection, Common-Rail Diesel Engine but for export only. Now, from what I've been told by a somewhat reliable sources is that this diesel power plant is most likely to become available in California JK', if not the entire U.S., as early as 2008 in an effort to meet new U.S. CAFE standards. Now, while I am a fan of diesel engines, this one does seem to be a bit on the small side but I do have to admit, with gas prices as high as they are now, maybe it's just what I need. Anyone else have an insider that can verify this?

I haven't been able to conferm anything with anyone I've talked to, but I must say I think it would be rediculous if they didn't offer somthing, perhaps the new blue tech diesel? It makes sense to me. the general trend right now is for alternet fuel source and better fuel economic vehicles. A diesel could get as much as 26mpg on the freeway, which could be 120 miles more per tank of gas or more, which is precicely what the consumers are looking for.... And can you say bio diesel? Clean donut smelling emissions.

Word is that the new Bluetec diesel is going to be a 46 state version. It did not pass CA's strict standards, even with cat, particulate filter and blue urea injection. It is going to be interesting to see if we see any more diesels in the "strict states".

The Jeep website press release estimates that the Grand Cherokee Diesel will only get 23 MPG/highway with the 3.0L. I don't see how a diesel JK could get any better given its shape, weight, etc compared to the Grand Cherokee.
Would they offer it with the 6-speed or as an automatic only like the Liberty?
Does anyone know how often "blue urea" needs to be added to a Bluetec equipped car?

California, for example, is not just a strict state, California is run by extremists.
It is all under the cause of things we can all agree on, clean air, environmental preservation, childrens' health, the elderly, etc.
The thing that makes it extremist is that it will never be clean enough. If carbon monoxide is reduced, then it will be oxides of nitrogen, then particulate matter. No matter how improved emissions are, they will always need to be better.
The exhaust could be perfectly clean, just CO2 and water, and that would not be enough (because of global warming).
It is a way of life for so many politicians and bureaucrats. They have religeous belief in Al Gore's idea that internal combustion engines are our doom.
