for all you folks that are not familiar with the new diesels, take a trip down to your vw dealer and take a new jetta tdi for a blast. you will really be surprised and i guarantee impressed, quiet, smooth and lots of torque for a small engine. i think the 2.8 will be fine in the jk all boils down to the gearing. Post up after driving the new diesels VW, BMW, Mercedes

The JK Diesel has a Mercedes auto box.
Your country has a long way to go to clean up your diesel and petrol before you get some really great engines.
Once you have a drive of the JK diesel you will find it will blow the JK V6 away

Agree it has to be a 3.0L or similar. I have driven the 2.8crd here in the uk and it is truly truly awful. It barely gets the 4dr going.
I have a 174bhp in a caravelle (vw van) and it flies, but then it is a super quality item linked to a six speed manual, if this combo was in the wrangler then it would sell so much better over here. (obviously down to gearing though).

A powerful diesel is definately the choice over here, the euros are good on power, superb on torque and don't sound too bad. This is a million miles away from the 2,8crd though. If anyone buys one on the basis of test driving a vw tdi.......prepare to be very disapointed indeed.

Any word of a diesel Rubicon?
Diesel would be ideal as petrol isn't very abundant is rural places.
Maybe I should just pack my Rubi in a container and send it to AEV to do a conversion for me. But the petrol will do too

This is (for once) not bull$hit...I did just read about a press conference concerning placing the diesel in the Wrangler for US sales. It is coming from Fiat, and is supposed to be avail in the 4th quarter of this year. That's about it for info at this point. I didn't see anything concerning size of the motor, other than the gas one will infact be the Penestar or whatever they call it.

Diesel sucks for acceleration

If you want power, buy a Hemi

Drive in Europe just one week, you will understand

OK. Great. Another "U.S. Diesel JK" rumor.

Post a link or quote an article. Until then, rumors are just that - rumors.

Oh. Wait. Here's one:

...and another:

...and another:

If u ever come to the states come take a ride in some of the diesels here. I know of some very clean burning/efficient diesels that would change your mind.

Wait for the JK diesel, and TRY IT first. Diesel is not the best solution, trust me.
As a profesional engineer (engines), yes I studied many engines in USA, Europe and in Japan
