Demand for JK still high?

the other thing is that the JK has bene out long enough to start hitting the Used car floors now too.. and many of them sweet low mileage trades or short term lease trades.. and that car segment is doing fairly well.. (low miles, late model used).. people that bought them as a regular 'SUV' and then didnt like them... gas mileage too low, too noisy, not comfy enough, etc and so its not uncommon at all to find a JK, esp a 4 door hard top with less than 15k miles on it in showroom condition and a lot less pricey than new...

Not always true. Depending on where they came from many of the used ones are marked at prices higher than you can get a new one now. I work for a non-Jeep dealership and all our JK's that we have come from auctions(program cars and off lease vehicles). We can't sell any of them now because we paid more for a used on than you can drive a brand new one off the showroom floor for. 1 example 2008 unlimited X 6speed, alloys, tow package and thats it. We paid about 17500 3 months ago at auction. I just looked at an identical Jeep 2008 and a 2009 colors being different: probably could have left with the 2008 for $16900 or the 2009 for $18200. Currently the morons who own my dealership are asking $20900 for the used one! Thats the KBB value?

That might explain what I saw last night. There was a 05 and an 06 tj unlimited sitting beside 3 07 unlimiteds. The TJs were 18,9 and 19,9. The unlimiteds were 16,9 and two were 17,9. I thought it was odd that the newer vehicles were so low. When I drove around the side to leave, I saw 5 more unlimiteds. I guess it is supply and demand.

Demand is down for sure... most dealers have way more inventory than they can get rid of... and its not necessarily because of a lack of buyers or good prices... Most all lenders have tightened the belt severely on financing so many who wouldve qualified for a loan a year ago either 1] dont qualify now, or 2] qualify but instead of say a 9% or 10% rate they are getting approved on a 25%!!! rate which makes their payment so high they cant afford to buy new...
Buy here / pay here lots are experiencing a surge in sales as a result....
there are several articles about this in "automotive news" a 'rag' for car dealers and people in the industry..
the other thing is many buyers are buying more practical cars as opposed to something fun.
and yet other segments are afraid they may lose their job so they are keeping their current car..
and of course those that feel gas will be $5 a gallon before the end of 2009....
its not just wranglers in the hurt, its everything automotive right now...
and though you and I and most on this board use our wrangler as a primary vehicle and find it practical.. there is a large segment of the population that buys them as a recreational vehicle and those people are keeping their wallets close to their chest right now....

That is very true about the financing. When I bought mine, every rate the dealer offered me was in the 17.5% range. I got up and walked out, went to my credit union, got a 6.5%, and got my 08 2-door X, with almost every option for $20k OTD.

For those that have gotten good deals recently, how have you been getting them down? I have a buddy wanting to get a JK like mine, and he wants to know what tactics people are using to get the prices down. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Walk in the dealer with financing already taken care of on your end, with a pre-approved amount from the bank and down payment, so you know what you can spend. Take a new Rubicon for example. Stickers at $33-34k. Fight to get it out the door for $28-29 and that would be a steal. You'd only be paying $25-26k for the vehicle. The right dealer will do it.

Its all a game. The thing to do is take control of the game. Dont let the dealer control the numbers and game, you need to take control. Walk in, tell them what vehicle you want, and what you want to pay, which should be a very lowballed figure that is actually less than you want to pay. The dealer will then come back and give you numbers higher than what you said. Reaffirm that you will only spend so much and tell them to try harder. Once they come back with second numbers, they will probably say its the best they can do. At this point, I got up to leave and told them I would go to one of the other 5 dealers in Las Vegas, and that finally brought them to the numbers I wanted.

My "negotiations" were easy. The dealership group I work for has a Jeep store and I was able to qualify for the EP dealership pricing program. I got my '08 Rubicon for $11k off because there was an extra $4000 rebate for dealership employees.
