Am posting for friend who owns 05 Jk-2 WD.
Dealer wants $130+ to service rear end (differential or ?) at 12000 miles.
Can you explain exactly what is done , why? Vehicle is mostly driven on highway-no offroad............................Thanks, Wally

Hey wally888, welcome to JK-Forum. I should tell you that if your friend has an 05, he has a TJ and not a JK and it certainly wouldn't be a 2WD. Either way, he wouldn't need to service the rear differential until 30,000 (unless he was in some deep water for a prolonged amount of time).

What is done is your rear differential cover is removed in order to drain the gear oil inside of it. Ususally you would take this time to inspect your gears and clean everything out with some brake cleaners. The cover is then replaced and filled back up with gear oil.

As far as cost goes, $120 seems to be excessively high considering new gear oil and RTV should cost less than $20 and the amount of time to do this job should only take about half an hour tops. Need I say, your dealer is trying to screw your friend.
