My JK is not my daily driver.
I drive an 08' Volkswagen Jetta TDI for work (20 miles away)
my wife drives the JK because her distance is shorter (1 mile away)

JK Junkie
the only reason I would want a daily drive is so I can beat the crap out of my JK and not NEED it to get to work the next day... needless to say I want a Diesel Ram and a trailer

We have three vehicles. I drive my 2008 JK about 70% of the time. However, we bought the wife a 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara back in July. This freed up her 2003 Suzuki Aerio sedan. Inasmuch as the Aerio has just under 18k miles on the odometer, it has many good years remaining. Thus, from time to time, I use it for the commute to work. It's paid for since 2008. It gets 12 mpg more than the JK to and from the office. Insurance is just $580 a year (with comp/collision/glass). So, we have a frugal, reliable third car that pays for itself in saved fuel bills, all the while helping to keep the JK's mileage low (just 7k a year).
The Suzuki still has 10 months of power train warranty remaining. I expect to keep the Aerio for the foreseeable future. My wife drives it some as well, even though the Grand Vitara sits there. I like this SUV. It has a 230 hp V6, full-time 4-mode 4WD with low range. It rides better than the JK, and has more interior space. Fuel mileage is better (only slightly) and it's quiet. The 5 speed auto is adequate, and it's loaded with standard equipment (very few options).
Sometimes, you just need a change of pace.....
My regards,
Widewing

I drive a '05 Kia Spectra as my DD. Yes it gets much better MPG than the JK (30-38mpg depending on what I have the piggyback ecu set at). I don't drive it as my DD so much as in making up for gas cost, more in the fact that the JK is the toy. If I break the toy (which is paid for) then oh well, it sits till I can afford to fix it. I still have my DD, and if all else fails I just steal my wifes R/T (I do sometimes anyways cause its a blast to drive!).
To the original OP.
Spectra New - $12,400 out the door
2dr Rubicon New - $27,800 out the door
30,000+ miles per year commuting
Spectra @ 35mpg - $2,785 @ 3.25 per gallon
Wrangler @ 16mpg - $6,093 @ 3.25 per gallon
Difference $3,308 per year.
For the kia it would only take 3.75 years to make up the price in gas milage.
Though as stated above the Kia wasn't purchased "primarily" for mpg, but your original figures are only good averages, for those of us on the west coast gas is alot more expensive and some of us do commute a good distance.

I'd rather drive my 2002 f150 back and forth two work. It gets about 18 miles per gallon while jk barely gets 15. It more practical for it to sit in the weather and the jeep to stay garaged all week. 50 miles per day works out better on the f150.
