Default Crash video 98 TJ VS 07 JK

They say they don't build them like they use to. They say the lighter sheet metal is junk. Well watch these two videos and compare.

The 2007 was redesigned to meet safety standards that the earlier one did not have to meet. It is going to be safer in crashes, because it was designed to be so.

Didn't quite look correct for it, but the 2 tests did not look quite the same....the 2007 was hitting square on into a wall, where the 2 dr was hitting what almost appeared to be a slight offset....not the true offset test you see where it nails just 1/2 the front end, but did not seem to be a complete full head on hit either.

Looking at these videos I don't think they are the same test. The JK is clearly a full frontal impact, but the TJ appears to be doing the drivers side impact. Note the intact headlamp on the passenger's side. Also there's rotation after impact which generally doesn't occur for a dead on.

The National Highway and Transportation Safety Association recently released its results for the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited frontal crash ratings. The results are impressive - 5 star safety for both the driver and passenger.

The recently released data also shows that neither the 2-wheel drive nor the 4-wheel drive models have an high risk of rollover. The 2-wheel drive model has a 19% chance of a rollover in a single vehicle crash (earning a 4-star rating) and the 4-wheel drive model has at 27% chance (earning a 3-star rating).

It is important to note that both the 2-wheel drive model and the 4-wheel drive model are equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC). If you follow general automotive news, you'll have recently read about the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety's recent push to get ESC into more vehicles sooner. They're lobbying lawmakers to speed implementation of a federal rule to require ESC on all new vehicles.

The sheet metal on a car has very little to do with how it crashes. All the energy management takes place in how the frame rails are designed along with the restraint systems inside (both active and passive) along with energy-absorbing trim inside the passenger compartment.

Like a Area-51 said, the JK has been designed under different safety standards so better performance should be expected. Back in 1998 no one really knew about the IIHS frontal offset impact tests either. That's a lot tougher crash for an airbag system to detect because 1/2 the vehicle is decelerating at a much different rate than the other half (since only 1 frame rail is taking the brunt of the impact). Also vehicles with ESC / stability control systems today can be amazing to drive and will also help keep you out of an accident to begin with.
