They are intended to absorb some of the energy from a front end collision so that at low speeds your air bags don't inadvertantly deploy. At least that's my understanding.

Just so everyone knows what we're talking about here, this is a crush can...
In essense, it is a thin hollow metal soup can attached to the metal factory bumper sub-frame. It's purpose is to help absorb a minor impact by collapsing and prevent the deployment of your airbags. There are no wires, electronics or switches inside it and are only as good as if they get hit - period.
