I was thinking the same thing. I mean if the Jeep is a 17 what happens when they rate Chevrolet. Can you get a negative score?

Consumer Reports should stick to rating microwaves and toasters. In a real world scenario any vehicle that was truly worthy of a 17 out of 100 score would be falling apart before you drove it off the lot.
Mine drives just fine on the highway. I use it as a daily driver and I have no complaints about the ride or the gas mileage. I'm at 4200 miles. If this vehicle was a 17 out of 100, I should have seen some major problems by now. I love my Jeep and no one is going to convince me that I shouldn't.

It's more about build quality, and on road performance. Many of us are fine with the way our jeep performs, but Consumer Reports thinks it's nothing more than a hunk of poop.
If I recall correctly, they put it down on account of cheap materials, Loud highway cruising, Poor gas mileage, weak engine and a few other things. Put these next to a Toyota Rav4, which rides like a car and moves when you push the gas pedal, they saw the wrangler to be a 17.

Well now in light of wayland's clarification I feel better. I've gone from WTF? to more of a REALLY ? REALLY ? SERIOUSLY?
They really don't understand this vehicle. I did a little surfing trying to find more info on this & the best I could do was find thier blog defending the rating. It had no break down on the scoring, but their defense is wtih comparison to other vehicles. What other soft top 4 door four wheel drive are they comparing against? They are so enamored with startrek next generation car interiors, bun warmers, cup holders dual zone climate controls lumbar & front wheel drive. Perhaps they do reduce the amount of whining we see here just by scaring off some of the softer crowd. It still peeves me. I will have to check for consumer reports subscriber status before performing anymore ill wheather rescue services with my ill mannered vehicle.

Jeep in my opinion cannot ever be described as an SUV. Its roots are from military vehicles meant to survive the challenges of off road. I bought my Jeep because it was one of the very few vehicles I knew could survive the road to my house on a continuous basis without leaving a pile of broken parts along the way. Our TJ survived for 5 years with no major issues just a few unknown rattles. To place a jeep in a category of wanna be off road vehicles with wussy drivetrains is ridiculous. Jeep is Jeep and has no category other than its own. There are plenty of tall SUV's out there that make there drivers feel like they have a real truck but these are made as grocery getters, not off road vehicles. I know Jeep is building vehicles to appeal to these types but I hope they always build the "real" jeeps also for people who actually like to get dirty .

You hit the nail on the head here... they rate APPLIANCES, and love cars that are soulless appliances (Camry/Accord/Civic/Corolla). Also, understand that their key demographic is older, softer drivers. I think that this is just a simple case of the tired old cliche that "it's a Jeep thing and you just wouldn't understand."

i think based on their method of scoring, we should be happy that they don't like it. they can keep their quiet, car-like rav's & cr-v's.
they dislike all the reasons we like the wrangler......except for the power thing. i could use a few more ponies.
