An electric motor until 40mph. Think of how quiet the trails would be.

Our JK's will be worth nothing if this thing really comes out. Time to think about selling.

Default Chrysler to build electric jeep 2010

Chrysler to go electric in 2010
Tue Sep 23, 3:48 PM

Email Story IM Story Printable View CHICAGO (AFP) - Chrysler this week joined the ranks of automakers promising to bring electric cars to the market in 2010.

The US automaker on Tuesday unveiled three plug-in prototypes: an all-electric sports car and an electric minivan and a Jeep outfitted with range-extending gasoline engines.

Just one will be produced for North American drivers in 2010 and later introduced to European markets, Chrysler said.

The others could be introduced at a later date, and Chrysler expects to expand its offerings of electric vehicles in the years to come.

"We have a social responsibility to our consumers to deliver environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient, advanced electric vehicles, and our intention is to meet that responsibility quickly and more broadly than any other automobile manufacturer," Chrysler chairman and chief executive officer Bob Nardelli said in a statement.

"The introduction of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge electric vehicles provides a glimpse of the very near future, and demonstrates that we are serious and well along in the development of bringing electric vehicles to market."

The all electric sports car, dubbed the Dodge EV, would have a continuous driving range of just 150 to 200 miles (240 to 320 kilometers) but would have enough power under the hood to go from zero to 60 miles (100 kilometers) per hour in less than five seconds.

It could be recharged by plugging it into a standard household outlet for four to eight hours.

The Jeep and minivan would have a range-extended electric engine that promises zero tail pipe emissions and a range of up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) on electric power and up to 400 miles (640 kilometers) with the addition of about eight gallons (30 liters) of fuel.

They can also be recharged at home in four to eight hours.

General Motors and Toyota have also promised to bring plug-in electric cars to market in 2010.

Default Electric 4 door JK in 2010???

One of three vehicles shown will be in 2010
interesting

"Klegon said the Jeep range-extended vehicles would be able to drive 40 miles on a single battery charge before the generator kicks in, giving the vehicle 400 miles of total range.

Chrysler thinks nature enthusiasts, who already enjoy the Jeep Wrangler for its off-road capabilities, will latch on to an electric-drive version."

I think it's pretty cool that Jeep is getting ready to use the Wrangler as a platform for this type of technology. I like the concept that they are going with in using strictly battery power for the first 40 miles. That would be long enough for me to get to work, plug in at the office, and then drive home again without using a single drop of fuel - yet if I needed to make a detour or go for a longer trip I've got the extended range capability. Plus (assuming they can make the system durable for off-road use) the Jeep is the perfect candidate for battery power since it's not exactly designed to be a V8 powered speed demon anyway.

I saw an energy expert commenting somewhere that building lots of nuke plants and wind and solar wouldn't solve our dependence on foreign oil because nearly all of it is used for our cars. Well, if we have the ability to plug our Jeeps into a socket and go 40 miles purely on battery power, and we can plug in our Jeeps to a socket at home or office and we can provide the juice for home/office with a wind/solar/nuclear power plant, then bingo - there goes our dependence on foreign oil and we can tell the Arabs to go suck on a camel

I found this picture and here what they had to say on Autoweek:

Two standbys of the automaker’s lineup, the Jeep Wrangler and the Chrysler Town & Country, would also get extended-range electric versions. They would have a range of 40 miles on electricity--just as the Chevy Volt--before a small gasoline engine that powers an electric generator kicks in to produce electricity and extend the range to about 400 miles. The gasoline tank would have room for about eight gallons.

The Jeep would have ratings of 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and Town & Country’s specs would be 255 hp and 258 lb-ft.
