Default cannot switch tops at the dealership???

I was at the dealership the other day and was ready to purchase a new 2011 2dr wrangler. well the jeep i found had everything i wanted i mean everything except it had a soft top. I wanted a hard top just cause i like the option and it boils down to being 800 at the dealer and 2000 after market. well they had 30 jeeps there and 20 had hardtops. so while making the deal i asked for a hardtop and they basically let me walk out of the dealership because they wouldnt switch a soft top out with a hard top OR order me one. i told them i would pay the difference and the cost of labor to have it done and they still said no. So im asking WHY? it makes no sense to me. ideas?

Well, technically, they can't "switch" out hard tops because the vehicle that came with it has it listed as such on the window sticker and if they took it off of that and put a soft top on it, it can affect that vehicle when someone else wants to buy it. Plus, it's a administrative nighmare to swap stuff across vehicles [working at a Ford dealership, we always get asked the same thing about swapping out wheels across different models, or running boards, etc.]. Now, why they would let you walk out on ordering you one, I'm not sure - but I don't think it's the same price to order one (even if it is a factory one). I could be wrong. For example, on a Ford Sport Track, if we get one with a factory hard tonneau cover, it's around $595 MSRP, but if I have to get one through Parts for one that doesn't have it, its around $1,195.00 . Never quite figured that out either.

In 07 I wanted a hardtop to go with the soft top, dealer gave me one for $750 added to the price.

Can’t do it because of the window sticker.
Just order one. They get to the dealer in 1 month or less

yea i tried to order one but they said they could not do that due to the 2011 hard tops being just a little different and they aren't available to be ordered yet. i think at this point i will just order a jeep exactly how i want and may just wait till 2012 for the new engine. hope the new engine lives up to the hype.

Yes a dealer can do it. My dealer does it all the time. They switched out mirrors on my truck for free. They were a $100.00 up-grade. They changer the window sticker on the other truck. They have also have done radios. Some dealers are better than others.

For what it's worth, the exact same thing happened to me except I wanted both tops. Dealer wouldn't order a soft top to add to the hard top they had on the lot. The dealer also searched other dealer lots within a 350 mile radius. No luck. There were several out there spec'd out like I wanted except for the dual top option. Dealer ordered one though and delivered in 31 or 32 days. Guess it ended well. Was an agonizing wait though. Dealers just won't swap or add tops.

For a dealer to let you walk away for something so insignificant, there must be a reason for it.
