2. Take every gas guzzling Jeep and SUV out there and they don't make a tiny bit of difference in the carbon emissions or petroleum consumption compared to the commercial trucks and buses that in most states are exempt from all but the least stringent regulations. You'd be better off taxing cow farts.

3. If you are really driving a gas guzzler, you'll be paying double taxes - the "green tax" and then every time you go to the pump, consuming a higher percentage of fuel, therefore a greater amount of gas tax than your pal in the hybrid!

4. The government already gets more than it's fair share of the fruits of my labor - tax when I earn, tax when I spend, tax when I give, tax when I die. No new "green" taxes please.

I think that I will not try and compare my 2007 Jeep to a 1970's model vehicle, any more than I would compare my TV to 30 year old unit.

Just because there are plenty of other gas burning carbon emitters does not mean that Jeeps or any other passenger vehicles should not be forced to clean up their act.

There needs to be incentives for both the public and the manufacturers to make more efficient vehicles. I think tax penalties are a perfectly fine way to do that. Along with big brother government mandates

Started sometime in March I think. If you ordered before, you should be exempt. If you ordered in March or after, then yeah, it'll be a little surprise when you pick it up. :-)

A thousand dollar tax is not an incentive. It is a regressive punishment that ultimately will do very little to accomplish what you desire. If you really believe in what you say, you would not have purchased a "gas guzzling" vehicle, only to assuage your guilt through the payment of a "green" tax and the imposition of the tax on others.

You cannot buy a ticket to heaven by paying for prayer credits. Act on your own convictions instead of faulting and punishing others who do not share them.

I shall flame no more on this.

No need to flame or be angry. Just exhanging viewpoints here.

I do believe in what I am saying and whether people think it is smart or not, we purchased a TerraPass for the Jeep (www.terrapass.com). Sort of a self imposed green tax. I'd prefer they just got better gas mileage though.

I have not faulted anyone for buying a Jeep. I would just like to see these things get more efficient. It is better for everyone. It is better for the environment it is better for the country.

It is in our own best interest of self preservation and in taking care of this good country to stop using so much of this liquid crack that we call gasoline.

I am for the new cafe standards as well.

The oil reserves are not in such a bad state right now. Politicians trump up the numbers to make the situation seem so much worse than it is. The U.S. does not even depend on foreign oil as much as most average people think. The only reasons gas prices skyrocket is because the greedy oil companies use the war and the belief that dependance on foreign oil is so horrible to their advantage. The oil companies have been making record profits in the past few years, fueled by speculation and rumors.

I agree we shouldn't trash our house (the environment), but we all shouldn't have to drive a butt ugly Prius all the time.

CAFE is just a ridiculous number that give the manufacturers something else to fudge. The testing standards are so controlled and opposite the way "real world" people drive, so that is really not a good indicator of how efficient a vehicle really is.

)

are you nucking futz?

we already pay more because we use more gas... why should I have to pay for it up front too?!

thats bull, they just want you to 'reconsider' your purchase and put that $1000 toward a Civic...

what if you CAN'T Buy a civic? what if you NEED to haul items / people for business or pleasure?

I HATE TAXES!

they take it when you make money, and when you spend it. might as well do neither!

the sooner we burn up ALL the oil, the sooner the change will occur...

burning less only slows the dependancy, it does not END it.

By driving TWO SUVs, a Boat, and jet ski, I am ensuring a future for my kids

how's that logic

A. I wouldnt live in Kalifornia b/c of the liberals and anti gun freaks

B. As long as there are rocks and dirt and mud and water hazards... the fewer trees there = less chance of me hitting one

C. I dont drink water b/c of the mind control agents the government puts in it... it turns you into a liberal sheeple... plus, alcohol is better for you... natural light to be exact.

It's a conspiracy.

Woah, what have I started...
I don't really have a problem with the Levy, it just means we may get a Diesel JK sooner than the US

Pickup trucks are exempt though, because as we know, everyone with a pickup uses it for business
