Black Wheels: Matte or Polished Finish?
#32
I umm'd and ahh'd about this, but eventually settled on gloss black. It's a classic look that nicely complements my glossy Jeep Green paint.
Matte black tends to look grey from a distance, while the gloss has a bit more depth. If my Jeep was matte green or olive drab, I'd consider getting matte black wheels. But as it is, I think it looks great and I get compliments all the time.

I just finished painting mine myself last night and I think they turned out great. I did a lot of research on this forum, youtube, other JK owners on an affordable way to paint them black. When all was said and done, I decided to simply spray paint them myself.
I used a satin black (instead of matte or glossy). There is just enough "shine" so they don't look dull, but still keep with the look I was going for.
After removing each wheel, follow these steps:
1. Lightly sand each rim with 320 or 400 gr sand paper.
2. Thoroughly wash each wheel. I used a degreaser first to remove any tire shine over spray.
3. Thoroughly dry each wheel.
4. Tape off each tire to protect from the paint. I used index cards in between the tire and the rim.
5. Apply a light coat... wait 15 minutes.. apply another coat and repeat. I applied 3 coats.
6. Let dry and apply clear coat (if desired).
Total Cost for all supplies: $25 dollars
