To my understanding, I also thought it had something to do with the automatic transmission. At least, from the stories I have heard, they were all auto, correct?

I think we shouldnt have to do anything to keep our jeeps form burning, let chrysler fix it, in the meantime keep sharp, and keep your insurance premiums paid.

also, there are only about 11,000 members on here, if 7 out of the 11,000 went up in flames..

Im sure the real numbers of JK's that have burned are in the hundreds.

I seem to remember reading a post not too long ago regarding auto transmission temperatures being quite high - sorry I can't be more specific than that, but if memory serves the person was seeing temps over 200 degrees wiith normal driving and found it shocking.

It is a theory - all of the ones that have burnt have been autos and it appears that the fires have started in the general area of the transmission dipstick. I added a cooler to both of my JKs due to the high temp that the transmissions were running with just the factory cooler. If the transmission is not the reason why the fires are starting, then I will definately extend the life of my transmission a lot.

On the other hand, if the fires are caused by the transmissions boiling over, and all they need is a cooler, then by me adding one to my JKs may actually save the lives of my wife and two children (2 and 3 years and cannot unbuckle themselves) who spend every day in the 4 door JK. Yeah, I have insurance (with gap coverage) and it will replace the Jeep, but not my family. That is why I am taking the percautions.

That was me. Both my 2 door with 3.73's and my Unlimited with 4.10's (factory setups as far as tire sizes, etc) would consistantly run well over 200 degrees around town. The highest I saw it get was just over 220. This was before I installed the coolers and in mild (mid to high 70's) weather.

Have any of these fires been reported on Manuals. Only reason I ask, Is because I'm sort of a worry wort with stuff like this, and if someone could hypotheize, theorize, or something about 6MT being safer and, up to this point free of this problem, it would make me rest easier. Just don't need to be buying into a potential problem as big as a fire! eeek.

So far, all that we have heard about are autos. The transmission of the JK in video in this thread is unknown.
