Advice on trading in 09 for 10?
Hey all, new to the forum.
A month ago I bought my first jeep but not my favorite color. I wanted the dark green Unlimited X but none were to be found. The salesman was an idiot and didn't know all the current colors. When I saw the light green on a test drive, I asked if that was the current metallic green cause I had only seen pictures. He said it was and I didn't want that color. Somehow, I ended up getting the surf blue which looked good up close. (hard top, auto, 32" wheel group, tow, power group)
Over a couple weeks I decided I didn't like how light it was and preferred a darker color and am currently in the process of trying to trade it in without too much of a hit to the bank account. fortunately, I did get the surf blue at a grand below invoice because of the incentive so my losses can be minimized.
I have a couple questions since I can't find any 2009's left.
1. Is the lifetime powertrain warranty really worth it to settle onto another color? I plan on keeping this 10 years or so, but does typical stuff like modding the jeep void it?
2. Is the 32" wheel and tire group available on 2010's? I like this, but can't find it on any dealer website available models nor the jeep webiste for 10's. Is it easily able to be modded onto a 2010 that I get?
Any other thoguhts? I think modding the surf blue with all black could make it look good, but it still seems pretty light from far away. Damn my one chance of buying on impulse despite all my research... oh well.

Personally....I think you are gonna get hammered on trade-in. IMHO...I would not consider trading it in unless the dealership does something amazing for trade-in value vs price of the new JK of your color choice!
If the dealership will screw you hard on trade-in.....why not put that lost cash you would see and take it to a body shop and see how much it would cost to repaint to your favorite color???? Could be cheaper....and you still would have your lifetime powertrain warranty!
If you got the lifetime powertrain warranty on our 09 another reason to keep the thing as the 10's don't have this option...(mind you Canadian's got hosed here anyways!). If you mod your JK....the dealership MUST determine that the aftermarket part(s) were the cause of the issue...end of story!
I wouldn't worry about 32" tires....pick up a set of cheap Rubicon wheels and rims off the for sale forum rather than upgrade the tires if you decide to go with the trade-in route!

If you trade it in you're going end up taking it in the tail pipe from the dealer. You'll have the same thing but be paying quite a bit more than you are now. Get black wheels, tint the windows if they aren't already... Make the most of what you already have.
As for the lifetime powertrain warranty, remember it's only remains valid so long as you can provide appropriate documentation that ALL scheduled maintenance has been performed on the vehicle.
With that said let me quote line from the movie Tommy Boy which relates to warranties...

Tommy: Let's think about this for a sec, Ted, why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I'm listening.
Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to fell all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing too]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

You can do all of your own maintenance, you just need to keep track of your receipts and log 100% of the work that you've done to it. I'm POSITIVE on that, don't let anyone tell you otherwise...

I guess my advice isn't all that helpful, but if it were me... I'd just use the extra money you'd be spending from a trade in and see how much it would be to have it painted a new colour that you're digging more than the surf blue OR just mod it with some rad parts all blacked out and I think it could look pretty awesome. I saw a picture on here in the "38's, 40's, and bigger" thread and someone actually had their Jeep painted almost the same colour blue and it looked awesome.
You'll always end up seeing someone with something that's bigger and better or something that you wish you had instead but that's just life I guess.
Hope it all works out for you!

My wife is anal about only have her vehicle serviced by the dealer. She had a rough experience with an Isuzu Amigo some years ago that ended with the engine seized and her and her then 4yo son stranded on the side of the highway.

I was comfortable with losing up to two grand in trading it in. One dealership offered me $24500 for it. Since I purchased the blue for a grand under invoice, then a two grand difference would mean I'm basically buying the different color for a grand over invoice. Only losing two grand is possible with all the incentives they were offering and I'm still driving my other vehicle to keep miles off the surf blue.
