If the vehicle came with a 3rd brake light, said light must be on the vehicle and in working order.

Guess i'm going to have to go out and drive around and see if I get cited. I took my 3rd brake light/stock carrier off last night to install my Smitty XRC bumper/carrier on Friday. Only thing that confuses me is , I see TONS of guys on this forum without the 3rd brake light with carrier style bumpers, thoughts or reason why they don't get cited?

They probably get away with it because cops have better things to do than worry about nitpicky BS rules that have little effect on our society.

I believe in many states it's required on all vehicles 2001 or later.

Never ran into trouble, but I ductape the oem light on for annual inspections

Haha, not here in Oregon, police LOVE seeing my Jeep on the road, and love to stop me even more "for a closer look". I guess i'm going to have to slap the stock carrier back on until I can get my bumper on friday (disappointment, I kinda liked the look of it off) and maybe then i'll have better changes on the road.

It sure is in Utah. Any lights that came on the vehicle stock are required to remain

A buddy bought a hardtop for his TJ that didn't have a 3BL. He looked and looked for anything on Illinois' books saying it was required and couldn't find anything so he didn't bother trying to rig one. I took mine off my JK, too. We've never had any issues.

I have to find it again , but I read here in California , you are require to have a third brake if is permanently mounted to the vehicle , in case of the jeep it is not permanently mounted , so you don't need it

Hm, interesting on the DOT stuff. I know Arizona just says two lights, no more info. However, it's pretty relaxed here as long as your two main one are functioning correctly and in plain sight.
