Is the 3.8 really a pos?

Turns my 35's on 3.73's nicely - has lots of go. Granted the headers and reprogram help (thanks, RIPP!) Even stock, however, mine just "felt" faster than a few buddies' JK's I've been in/driven. Who knows? Built on a Tuesday maybe?

first of all, nothing is perfect !
my 4.0 in the rubi got a hole in a piston at 10k miles and I got a new engine. No problems since then BUT that was unexpected as it was well taken care of.
We rented a 2010 JKU auto in Hawaii for 2 weeks this year and the 3.8 ran fine IMHO. This was all stock, so a bit lighter that a built jeep.
I am looking forward to a test drive in the 2012 !

same here..and i paid the extra 1800 bucks for the lifetime bumper to bumper..BOY that has come in handy..after an exhaust/intake upgrade and a reprogram my jeep has plenty of get-up for what i need to do..but mostly im just cruising in and around portland at 25-35 mph..goes just fine for me, no major motor issues so far..same as almost any other motor out there. on forums you typically hear about the bad experiences and get all of the questions and concerns, but rarely do you hear somebody say, WOW i love this engine, no issues at all. i think the 3.8 is decent, but the 3.6 should be better for jeeps. i just don't feel its neccessary to upgrade just for a new engine when i have all of the warranties and a dealer that doesnt screw me over.

Proper maintenance helps, but so does plain old luck.
Getting an engine where all the material, parts, torques, and tolerances are put together near perfect.......is still based on the odds.
Since it is all done by people, and they are only human.

I don't hate my engine at all, but i have had issues with my power train.. 36k rear main seal, year later, another rear main, lower intake manifold leak, exhaust manifold leak, and my torque converter was shot. Other than that, no issues at all with the engine.
it has enough power for me and what i do with the Jeep. With 4.10's it really helps with the 35's i'm running, and with my CAI, and synthetic fluids i'm getting over 16 mpg average.
