2012 Wrangler 3.6 ,5 Speed Auto
Just read this on the Internet:
Cars.com reported on an interesting tidbit recently - that the 2012 Wrangler will be getting a new 3.6L V-6 engine that will improve milage about about 10%:
The 2012 Jeep Wrangler will get a new 3.6-liter V-6 and a five-speed automatic transmission, mated to an all-wheel drivetrain. The update promises to improve gas mileage by 10%. The current Wrangler gets 15/19 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission.

Awd
Not the first Jeep to have AWD. Remember the Golden Eagle of the late '70's? it had quadratrac full time AWD. Low range was optional, and center differential lock was via a vacuum switch in the in the glove box.
Except they had a V-8. and a turbo 400 automatic. and got about 10-12 mpg.

Don't believe the AWD thing. They are referring to the existing setup. Like many on this site I have been looking at this for details since last year and there has been zero mention of any change in this area. I also doubt the 10% number. The Wrangler is roughly 750- 1k lbs lighter than the grand cherokee and that gets 16-22 in 4wd (17-23 in 2wd) with the pentastar. 10% would be 17.6 and 24.2 respectively. I believe the final numbers will be just a bit higher with the variable being wind coeficient. I am hoping for 18-24 mpg's minimum.
I can speculate as well as anyone else.

Other than the new engine and trans the drivetrain is going to be largely unchanged. Any talk of AWD was just speculation from the rags who thought it might help Jeep move more units to soccer moms, but it isn't going to happen, at least not this go round.
New engine and an extra cog in the gearbox though is more than enough to have me nursing a semi. The fact that they charge over 800 bucks for the current (and awful) four speed box is nothing short of criminal.
'12s should be a little quicker, a little more efficient (emphasis on little), and a hell of a lot smoother and more refined.
