Default 2012 Towing capacity?

*This question is for member that have the 2012

Please check your Jeep owner's manual and confirm what is the Towing capacity for the 2012?
(Unlimited - X, Sahara and Rubicons)

Is it the same as the 2007-11?

My assumption is that there is no change, but how knows?
Please and thank you.

The Jeep website still says 2,000 lb for the 2dr and 3,500 lb for the 4dr. Those are the same I think.

I've read that towing isn't so much the engine as it is the chassis. I think all V6's pull about the same amount, but the track/width of the frame, the wheelbase, and the suspension system play a big part in the tow rating. One of the reason why long wheelbase, wide track, leaf-spring suspension pick-ups, even with V6's can tow upwards of 5,000 lb.

Only thing I can never figure out is the Liberty, they can pull 5000lbs

......... Gee I'm stumped too. Both JKU and Liberty have the same wheelbase and basically the same rear suspension. Maybe it's because Liberties don't cone with a soft top? (a safety thing)

It has to be something to do with federal regulations. Wranglers are rated for a much higher towing capacity over in Europe. The only difference is they have the diesel over there. The Grand Cherokee with the Pentastar is rated for 6000lbs I believe.

The higher tow capacity in Europe is not associated with the diesel. The rating was the same if it had the 3.8L gas engine.

im not worried but its got me thinkin now why a rubicon couldnt pull 2000 with out a trailer group package after all 4.10 gears are
in mine !
The tow capacity changes with the gear ratio.
With 3.21, be it 2dr or 4dr, the limit is 1000 lbs.
The highest the 2dr can get is 2000 lbs, with 3.73 and 4.10.

Take a look at how the hitch attaches to the frame and you'll understand the low rating. The crossmember isn't attached to the frame strong enough, in my opinion. Looks like it could twist off.

As far as I know, it's the same crossmember that's rated for over 7000 lbs in Europe.

The attachment looks pretty rugged to me.

It's all in who approves it! You need the right tool for the job and a JK is not the tool to tow more than 3,500lbs. Doesn't matter what they allow in Europe if you're wanting to tow here. If you don't like it, buy a different vehicle or move to Europe.
