ok just checking out the jeep website, and looking around at the 2009 colors and noticed that there is not a blue steel this year? as a happy blue steel owner, i was suprised to not see it but to see the "deep water blue pearl" instead? was it really that unpopular?

Not so much unpopular, more like Jeeps way of keeping things rolling. If you look really hard you will see every year they drop one or two colors and add one or two new ones. I think it is there idea of a cheap way to keep resale up and keep things uniqe.
