????
I just drove from Phoenix, AZ to Colorado Springs, CO over the Christmas holidays, about 1900 miles round trip. The terrain is pretty damn mountainous, 4 door, stock motor (flashpaq'd), I'm running 1 ton Dana 60's, 40" Goodyear MTR's, 5.38:1 gears, heavy Walker Evans beadlocks, loaded down with two adults and a metric shit ton of christmas presents, over drive turned off 99.9% of the drive and I was pulling 290+ miles per tank on winter gas. I must have the one golden 3.8L produced.

As someone else mentioned, this sounds like a case of Winter gas to me.
In many areas of the country they are required to do an E10 blend in the winter, but are allowed to sell pure gasoline in the summer. (Unfortunately here in MN, it's E10 all year round...) That takes roughly 2-3 MPG from all of my car at least. My TJ's 4.0 it wasn't really felt. (Still waiting for my JK for comparison...)

Winter Blend
Ethanol knocks down the mileage ,I'm getting 4mpg less than the "Summer" mix, there seems to be more ethanol in the fuel, doesn't even smell like gas. Wait 'till it "officially" goes to 15% ethanol.I think it is already, testing it out on us to see if we notice.

Not sure what tank size is on the 2dr.
Edit: so I checked tank sizes 2dr (18.5gal) vs. 4dr (21.5gal). Which means I am, oddly enough, still getting better mileage.

I have a 2009 4 dr. It has a 22.5 gallon tank according to specs. When the fuel light comes on I typically have used 18 gallons (based on putting 18 gallons back to fill up). I have gotten 218 and 212 miles on the first two tanks when the light goes on since I have owned it.
Switched to 87 octane and hope to do a little better.

I don't know if he is a 2 door or wagon, but my wagon gets poor mileage in the winter too, about 2 less around 12 mpg or so.
Bone stock, rubiwagon-auto.
I've never been impressed with this brick's mileage.
Good thing it'll be paid for by the time gas gets crazy expensive (summer 08 prices) cause I'll just replace the payment book with gas prices.
It's still the coolest thing I've ever driven.
