my 2 cents...
I had the same dilemma as you when buying my jeep and ultimately went with the X ('08 unlimited, auto, S-package, w/ rear locker) because i assumed i would eventually be replacing most of the upgrades that came on the rubicon (e.g. tires, gear ratio, shocks, rock sliders). in the end, after replacing shocks/coils, wheels/tires, 5:13 gear ratio, and rock sliders, i spent less than what i would have spent on a rubicon.
personally, i wouldn't put too much value on the parts because most people looking to buy parts are probably looking to upgrade like you (but i could be wrong).
Bareass definitely makes a good point. if you plan on making the modifications over a long period of time, you may want the capabilities of a stock rubicon until you make certain modifications (e.g. running larger tires would be less painful with the rubicon's 4.10 gear ratio than the X's 3.73 or 3.21). i had to make the jump to bigger tires, gear ratios, and lift all at once with my X.
as for the rubicon badge getting you a higher resale value...why would you be selling your jeep???
hope this helps and good luck with the decision! either way, you can't go wrong!!!

Pick up a rubicon owned by Alan Jackson. I have a hard time picturing him driving this around.

i got my 08 unlimited rubi loaded minus the dual top for 29k flat out the door. I looked at X's and at the time found the rubi for within 1k of the X i couldnt pass it up. I think it comes down to what kind of deal you can get. If the dealer comes down on an X more than a Rubi buy the X but if you find a smokin deal on a rubi, buy away.

if someone already posted this option, sorry i missed it, but here's my $0.02
you can further lower the total cost by about $785.00 by buying a rubicrawler box from Adv Adapters instead of the full t-case. keep the sock t-case, add rubicrawler box & get 1:1, 2.72:1, & 7.4:1 gear selection.
$30,340.00 (lower actually, since you should be able to get an X for a couple grand under list price or around list price w/TT&L).
