I have a 2013 JKU Rubicon and looking for a good winch. What size and brand do you recommend and why? I'll go with a synthetic rope.

On this and other forums, search for the word RECON.

Not as expensive as WARN, better than Harbor Freight.

Punishment ready.

Bought the Smittybiit X20 10500 lb winch. Paid about $550 if I remember right. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet.

Personally I recommend Engo (great price and best warranty out there) or Warn (it's Warn...). Definitely stay away from Harbor Freight winches. 50/50 chance on whether it will work out of the box. Smittybilt's I end warranting about 3 out 4 that I sell. Recon, I don't carry but I've heard good things about them. Mile Marker, Superwinch, are both good brands, but can get up there in price, at which point just spend the extra cash and get a Warn.

You're never gonna have to pick up your rig with a winch. You need enough force to pull it out of mud and holes, or to pull trees out of the way or closer to you for firewood etc.

The 10,500 RECON I own, has been through a Pathfinder, a lifted Expedition on 35's stuck in the snow, and now my Wrangler.

I've never thought for a moment that I need more winch.

The gearing, size of the drum and how close to the drum you are with the cable determines how much force you are getting through the winch.

Buy a 10.5 to 12.5 and a large SNATCH BLOCK and you should be fine.

Btw - in all my winching, I've never actually had to use my snatch block and recovery straps etc, it's just in case.

Master Chief, for a JKU, a minimum of 9k for your rig.

Rule of thumb for winches is rig weight x 1.5. A 10k will also work well on a JKU, if you are routinely out on the trails with full size trucks. Yo would want to consider a snatch block or a 12k.

Thanks for all the info Mike. Also thanks for the promotion. The CMC is a Navy Seabee rate, it stands for Construction Mechanic, Chief, E-7. I've been steering myself towards Warn, my thought is to by the best the first time around, spend the money and buy it once instead of replacing later on.
