I have a 2008 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara automatic transmission. (4 door) Smittybilt Atlas bumpers , front and back, will a smittybilt 8000 LB wire winch be enough? Btw i have american racing alloy wheels on it and 35" kumho tires.

I have the 8000 used it a couple times with no problem. But if you are stuck in deep mud I don't think it would get you unstuck. But it was what I could afford. But IMO an 8000lb winch is better than no winch.

I had the smitty 8000 on my prev 08 Unlimited and it worked great every time I used it. I think it really just depends on what your purpose is... Self recovery it will do fine for most.
My opinion is that most folks buy too much winch and either never use it or under use it.

General rule of thumb is minimum of 1.5x weight of vehicle. A stock jku is 4400lbs dry. Add on all of our parts and we run 6-8000lbs. Thats why some ppl are running dana 80's now. I am going with a 10,500lb this Christmas and would not go less than 9500 on a jku

Keep in mind that the 8k and 10k weight ratings are not on the first 20 ft of wire you spool off. Ideally you're supposed to go down to 5 wraps left on the drum for maximum capacity. A snatch block will double the effective capacity of your winch provided you use it correctly.

I went 9,000 and it works fine. I have pulled a couple of heavy F250's off the beach (stuck to the frame) and the winch performed flawlessly but I don't mind admitting I was a little concerned. I feared my synthetic rope was going to snap...
