My dad was a SeaBee during World War II. He learned to weld there, then
turned that into a career until he retired in his early 70s. He now lives in Chula
Vista, CA (just south of San Diego). Despite having only a fourth grade
education, he is the person who made something very notable: In the 1950s, he
fabricated a working model of the very first jet engine thrust reverser for his
company, Rohr Corporation, so that they could market it to Boeing for their
707 aircraft. That model is now on display at the old headquarters building (Rohr
has since been bought out). And nearly all large commercial and military aircraft
use that same basic thrust reverser design even today.
BTW: Everyone in the Oklahoma City area: Tonight is the big flag retirement
that I'm chairing for the Boy Scouts. This is our fifteenth annual retirement,
and we will hit a milestone tonight: 10,000 flags. If you're free, come on out
and join us and watch my Jeep as we tow those flags up to the firelay. 6 p.m.
at Choctaw Creek Park--just south of the intersection of Northeast 23rd Street
and Harper Road in Choctaw. You can't miss us--we'll have the field full of
hundreds of flags, including many of the very large ones, as we fold them all
afternoon. We do this in honor of veterans, and have a special place in the
ceremony where they lay the flags. Our guest speaker is a veteran of
Guadalcanal, so come on out!

Here is one for Veterans Day. Let's remember all those who are fighting for our freedom and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mark, your paw sounds like another cool old dude. Not surprised it runs in the family. The flag ceremony sounds really interesting. I bet it's very memorable. Anyhow, here's is my Jeep's patriotic touch.
I took it off for a while, but I decided I liked it better on.

Last night I chaired a Boy Scout event to retire U.S. flags. Here are a few
pic's. There's a picture of my Jeep with the trailer positioned with the flags so
that the assembled crowd of several hundred could lay the flags on the firelay
in the mix.
These boys from two troops built the firelay last Sunday (behind them) ...
You can see my Jeep in the background positioned with the trailer to receive
the flags as they are folded ...
We had a dozen flags this size, then one flag that was about twice as large ...
Jeep positioned behind the firelay. 1,262 flags on the trailer and another 125
prepositioned on the firelay (getting us to 9,999 flags at the previous fifteen
flag retirements) ...
Order of the Arrow lights the firelay ...
Two Boy Scouts blow Silver Taps ...
American Legion fires a gun salute ...
