Topless roof rack
Hey everyone hope the trails and such are treating you all well.
I have got a question for everyone who out there who owns a jeep. I am a huge outdoors man along with my girl, we kayak hike mountain bike rock climb etc... How ever we love to go out wheeling and everything as well. So the question is; Is there a roof rack out there for soft tops that you can put on while topless?? One that will hold a mountain bike and kayak. Not really looking to buy a trailer if a rack will be cheaper.
Thanks.

As long as it is not a hard top only roof rack (forgot the one brand that comes to mind), you should be okay with most of the racks while topless. The roof racks will attach to the windshield bracket and also somewhere in back. Some will even let you lift up the rack to take on/off your soft top without removing the whole rack.

There are several companies that make roof racks that will work with soft tops let you put the top up or down with minimal effort.
Garvin Wilderness: Expedition series (sponsor here)
http://wildernessracks.com/jeep_exp.html
Gobi (lots of fans of it on here)
Wildboar (gets kind of pricey)
And a few others that I cant think of off the top of my head. Hope it helps a little.

Post up some pics if you get one. I have been looking into the Gobi Rack...just can't convince myself to spend the money. Seems like better accessories with the Gobi and a lot more positive reviews from those that have them.

So Picky
I guess I am really picky. I still cannot find a great roof rack that I like. I want a full size roof rack and that MEANS a FULL SIZE cargo area as well, that doesn't require drilling, and RAILS are about 4 to 5 inches high. Garvin rails are 4 inches but their product requires drilling. I also want a MESH flooring so the rack can hold smaller items like duffel bags, etc. I don't mind drilling into the bumpers, but I will not drill the body.
My fear of drilling the body is rust. We have snow, salt, and lots of rain on the East coast, so the rack has to be coated with a good bed liner to prevent rust, chips, etc., that powder coating just can't handle. I don't mind having to coat it myself and getting the rack in bare metal.
Anyone know of any new manufactures out there???
Jeff
