Default Tips for buying used welders?

I'm looking at buying a used welder to start fabbing up some stuff for my jeep. I've never welded before and I want to start learning how. I already know that I want a 220 welder so it can handle 1/4" or better. I might have a lead on a Millermatic 175 (don't know the condition just yet) he wants to trade my 37s with 50% for it. I'm wondering if this maybe a good deal or something I should pass up on. Anyone use a Millermatic challenger 175? Is it worth trading the 37s if the welder is in decent shape? Anything I should look for when inspecting it? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

I would test it out before buying it atleast, or have him throw down some beads. Miller is a great product have used them with great success.
