Tailgate Warning!! Bent the crap out of mine!
I bought about 700 sf of hardwood the other day... I have a 4dr jk, and even with the seats folded down in the back the wood boxes would not fit, so I lifted the glass in the back and closed the tailgate. I placed the wood in the back leaning them on the tailgate, about 500 lbs worth.
After unloading the wood, I went to close to the glass and tailgate to find a gap between the glass and the tailgate, about 1/2". I quickly realized that laying the wood on the tailgate actually bent it down, causing the gap. I always thought that it was solid back there, but now I realize the top 1' or so of the tailgate is a thin piece of metal that is there to secure the glass.
Learn from me, don't lay anything to heavy on your tailgate, as it bends very easily!

Thanks for the warning! Thankfully when I was trying to haul a 7.5 foot couch the other week it wouldn't fit by literally 2 inches. If I could have gotten the tailgate closed I was going to do the same thing as you: sit the couch on the tailgate and leave the glass up. But since I couldn't quite get the tailgate closed we found another vehicle.
I will definitely keep it in mind not to do that in the future
