I don't understand this? Why don't you guys just open the gate halfway when you put the top on?

I do every time. In fact, I wouldn't be able to take the roof off any other way. It is on the right side where all the damage has occurred because I almost always seem to accidentally drag the bottom of the hardtop on that part of the tailgate as I lift it off. I do it in two parts. I get in the jeep lift the top up to get it off the rubber bumpers and then rest it on the tub lips and the right corner of the tailgate. After doing this several times, I realized that it had banged up that corner pretty bad, much of it through the paint to the primer and a few dents too. Now putting the top on I do it in one motion now, but hadn't perfected that last summer and did it in two steps with the tailgate open. I am sure the banged up gate wouldn't bother most, but for me and probably some others who are anal like me it does.
