I don't know if this will work, but look up Rivnuts. Might be a good blind application for installing them.

I was skimming this thread and thought the same thing. I've always known them as threadserts (thread insert) might be a brand name though. They install with a rivet gun or supplied tool. You may want to practice on a piece of scrap first though because if you don't get it tight the first time, they're a pain to get out.

I dont know how well the rivet would hold up with the thickness of the metal on the door. I dont mind if some studs stick out of the door, but I do like the idea of just being able to undo some wingnuts to take the cans off.

That's the beauty of these Rivnuts. They are designed to receive a thread, so you can still do the wing-nut on threaded rod, or thumb screws or something.

I decided to mount my ammo can in the factory airbox slot... I do like the idea of having them on the tailgate door though...

I used the plastic ammo boxes. I built a platform that raises them off the floor so you gain some storage under the boxes. The platform bolts into the existing seat mounts in the floor so you can remove it if needed. I then used nylon webbing to secure them to the platform. These are lighter and won't leak. I used an orange one to put my first aid items inside. I built a fold up tray that mounts to the tailgate to hold my cooler.
