Hello everyone, sorry to hijack but... I'm new around here and figured this would be an awesome project to do.

I'm planning on doing mine tomorrow afternoon... Can someone give me a better suggestion for anything? So far... This is how I plan to go about it,

1. Wash off rims and tires very well and let dry.

2. Sand down wheels with 400 grit sandpaper (all i have)

3. Wash rim with acetone.

4. 2-3 coats of white Dupli-Color sandable primer. (burst spray method)

5. 2-3 coats of 'Universal Flat Black' Dupli-Color perfect match automotive paint. (burst spray method)

Any suggestions? Should I a clear coat at the end?
Thanks in advance for the help.
I plan to write a write-up as well.

note that this was also posted in another thread.

Default Just wanted to say thank you

Mudflap,
Just wanted to say thanks, as I read your post here and with your great description/instructions I gave it a go. With a used set of wheels/tires the results came out great and even passed a trail test and wash

Hey no problem man, glad I could help. Those came out great! Mine are still holding up just fine, no issues yet. The beauty of the home job is if it does eventually get rough, you can just sand it down and do it again in an afternoon.

I just did mine over the weekend. Most of my time was spent taping. I used High Temperature BBQ paint, since that is all that I could find over here in Africa. This is definitely the way to go. Just as someone said earlier in the thread, if done correctly they can/will turn out just as good as a factory painted wheel.

Would there be a problem just painting over the wheel weights? I'm debating about using a clear coat because I don't want it to be too shiny but a nice flat black.. What primer are you guys using I just picked up some all purpose automotive metal primer?

THanks in adavance

Thejmack, I painted over my wheel weights and have had no problems. If the wheel needs to be rebalanced then just spray a touch up where the weight was and over the new weight.
As to a primer, no primer was used on my wheels and with a pretty heavy snowy winter with tons of road salt/sand/rocks they are still holding up great
