It's pretty easy. I do have issues with Tuffy directions in general, but after some cursing and a couple of calls to them it went in pretty good.
When they say the 4wd shifter is tough to get off, they mean it. The hardest part, I think, was taking the old console out. But I solved that with a big hammer and dremel.
One really nice thing, is that for the most part the Tuffy one is a solid piece, where that factory one is many pieces.

No, I have the Cobra 75 box behind the dash. I do keep the handset in there
when I want it locked up.
The install was pretty simple. Like the OP said removal of the stock one sucked. I ended up taking it completely apart which was easier with the seats removed. I ended up putting an open end wrench under the knob and hitting it with a hammer.
