You could always use a product called Speed Weld. It's pretty cool stuff. Two part putty, mix it together and mold it into shape. When it's hard you can sand or grind it. But yeah, welding is the bomb.

I had like seven lock mech ideas in my head for days and this one won out. I may try another with washers welded off the face to see if it looks cleaner than the holes but all in all I'm pretty happy with this version.
