I kind of dig the safari racks but I'm really not interested in spending upwards of $800 plus on a roof rack at the moment. Realistically I only want it for a cheap, entry level kayak I plan on buying this spring.
Is it possible to just toss the thing on the roof and strap it down front and back? (IE: not to take on major treks... trips of less than an hour, or those in town).

Here's one link: amazon.com/Thule-Roof-Rack-Gutter-Mount/dp/B00076Y3BE
Here's a few pics... I've got them mounted on my hardtop and another on the softtop door surrounds with no top. They can handle quite a bit of weight... I've had a mattress & boxspring up there, skis & snowboards.... it's pretty sturdy. I just wouldn't recommend adding a ton of weight on it. The door surrounds are plastic afterall. Just use common sense. I hope this helps.

I am a kayaker, and since buying the jeep I have been tying to figure out this rack thing too.
Since I plan on having my trektop on all summer, the Thule rack won't do me any good. I've pretty much settled on the Lange originals rack. If you haven't seen it you should check it out.
