there was a member on here that attached his to i believe the hardtop and had no issues with it. I have been looking for that thread but havent been able to find it. I like the idea but dont know how usable for the summer it would be.

I have my Thule roof rack which means no drilling and interchangeable rack systems.
Right now I have my ski and snowboard rack on with fairing. Looks great and haven't seen anyone else with the same setup. Just have to watch the clearance. This adds at least another foot to my overall height. I can send pix after work

Don't mean to to Hi-Jack the Gobi Rack concept at all, but earlier I saw one (Kevin from AL, and plroussel-Boston) mentioning a Kayak Carrier! Here's my "cheap kayak rack" idea for carrying my 2 Seater Klepper....( ~ 100#) Jeep is 15' from front of Rampage bumper to back of JK, and the Kayak is 16'. So, there is virtually - No Overhang !
I just used my tow hitch opening....an elongated arm bracket ...some 1" threaded iron pipes & insulation. I'm had to create my own (out of necessity) and tried to make it as Simple & Portable, as possible. {KISS, ya know!}
And, it sure ain't Fancy!
The first pix shows the "cradle" turned 90 degrees - showing how it attaches. The "welded hoop" is there to secure a stern line to the vertical rack support when en-route. And, I put a boat cushion where the Kayak/Winshield meet, for "Cushioning Effect", using bow lines tied to my front D-Ring shackles. Need 2 Kayaks ? Make the "cradle", wider.
Originally I had constructed this 'some 15 years ago' and had it on my CJ-5; needless to say, a bit of an Overhang!! A TeXas ranger once said: "OK to have it extend out back..but NO 0verhang out front. Guessed it looked sort of funny to others, when travelling. But hey, it got me to & from the H2O and where only a very few could follow - (Love Jeeps) - as my point of entry was not on the map and GPS had yet to be invented/marketed .. and did it for years with, No Tickets!
