Some people use rivets, but I used self taping screws. Drilled small holes in the panel, small holes in the tailgate, then put a small rubber washer on the self tapping screws & I was done.

How bad tail gate damaged and how did you fix it before you installed diamond plates?
I might have to do the same since someone rear-ended me last year and damage was covered by XRC tire carrier all this time

I like that a lot fixed mine sort of the same just took two pieces of 20 gauge steel and covered center section I'm too scared to go drilling all over jeep lol really like that set up.
