I just did this mod too. You may want to check your states 3rd brake light laws though. I know in Pennsylvania if your vehicle came equipped with one you need it for inspection. Also some states require you to light your license plate at night. Poison spyder makes a light that does both, it is what I used. I just made a cut in the tramp stamp behind where the license plate goes so I could run the wires through the tailgate without them being seen and so it lays flush.

We dont have inspections in MI. As for the license plate light, you are correct.
