I used the flat black BBQ grill paint and have not had any issues. I did not remove or tape off anything. I just shot paint everywhere I could see. I did not care about overspray as I don't care if my heat shield does not look good. I put about three coats on and it's been all good. I'm approaching the 1 year mark.

I used the Rutolium high heat stuff and it worked well for about a year. After a salty winter the paint wore through and I had to sand it a bit and repaint again. My only problem is that after getting it dirty the muffler won’t clean up that well as the stains seem to get baked on. I think I am going to pull the trigger on a Magnaflow 4x18" and relocate underneath between the frame rails.

I did this on my old YJ. I noticed the muffler had rust all over it. So i took a can of rubberized undercoating that i had laying around and shot it all over....didn't even sand anything. It was like that for about a year I think before I sold it and it still looked fine. I'm not sure if the rubber would end up melting off or what.

I agree with shredX. Flat black BBQ grill paint works great. Just hold a piece of cardboard to control your spray .

Has anyone found any other way to take off the stock muffler w/o cutting or heating the rubber part?

Did mine last weekend. Flat black BBQ paint. Took a wire brush to the muffler first to knock off anything loose. 100% improvement.
