I have family close to Houston but it is 6 hrs way. I have heard you would not want to drive your jeep this far after a gear instal. For you that are traveling what do you do about the break in process.

I spent almost $1300 for my gears and install. Saving almost $400 would be awesome. I did get one great thing included though. My installer took the covers off at 500 miles and inspected the gears and changed my oil to synthetic.

I had mine done at 249 Drivetrain about a month ago. I have put about 1300 miles on them since he installed the 5.13 gears. I love the difference in driving. It does not downshift as much on the freeway and just feels a little quicker around town.

I just got back from a trip to Ft Worth for the NASCAR races this past weekend and with no top on the Jeep I got 15.2 MPG average driving about 70 - 75. I have auto with 35" tires and again that was no top and windows down.

Just changed the diff fluid before I left for the weekend although he said these gears did not really need it? He said they did not have any coating on them that needed to be changed out. He just suggested to keep it below 65 MPH during the first 500 miles.

So gears actually hurt mileage?
I figured less strain would mean higher mpgs.
Guess I still don't get it.

Less rotational strain but at that ratio, it equals to higher than stock RPMs at a certain speed. Higher RPMs usually yield less MPG.

MPG depends on way too many factors to simply say that using lower gears will hurt your mileage.

In the case of the JK, they allow you to stay in the power band (~2200-~3200) much more readily, which gives you more power and better "driveability". If you drive at least moderately conservative, this usually translates to better MPG but it always translates to a more enjoyable drive.

I am not sure if you were referring to my post of 15.2 MPG on the freeway with auto, 35s, and topless but that is slightly better MPG for me. I am turning around 2500 - 2700 RPM going 70 - 75 MPH. I was getting about 13.5 - 14 MPG before the gear change.

3 hours. test drove and let it cool for thirty minutes.

for the trip home. I knew driving 300 miles straight wasn't good, so here is what I did.

drove to bufallo wild wings after 20 miles. played ntn, watched sports, golden tee. only planned on being there for 30-40, but spent 2 hours b/c it's fun there. do you know they have over 20 beers on tap?

drove a little farther, went into an Academy Sports. spent another hour there.

I drove it for an hour, stopped at a rest stop. took a power nap. cooled for 45 minutes.

I drove it another hour. Went inside walmart. spent 45 minutes

then drove it the last 115 miles home. I varied my speed the whole way. driving from 55-65mph. I bet people behind where pissed.
