Default My turn to build/make a snorkel

I like the look of the AEV snorkel but don't like the price tag; so I decided to make my own instead. Here are a few pics of the build up to this point. I probably won't be able to work on it this weekend but will hit it hard and heavy on Monday. There will be a few other pieces to it also, this is just the plug of the main section.

Styrofoam sheets used to make the plug:

Glued pieces together to make a rough starting point to carve from:

Rough outline taking shape:

Outline finished and taped up waiting for wax and then fiberglass:

Test fit. It will be cut down to around where the black tape is on the window and has not been shaped for the pre-filter attachment yet:

so, what do you think so far? I will form the piece that attaches to the air box the next time I get to work on it then connect them together. Once I get the fiberglass on and harded up I will cut the form down the side and pull it off the plug, then add the rivet nuts for the mounting supports, smooth out the inside, and reconnect. When I am finished it will look very close to the original AEV snorkel..

This is awesome. Can't wait to see how this turns out. What are your plans for the internal bits and the hood chopping part?

I've been considering something like this too, but more in the style that the Rugged Ridge guys are trying (curved panel near windshield).

Wow, in a matter of weeks you seem to have addressed nearly every mod!

Can't wait for the full cage, headers, vented hood, body skins, exhaust system...

I know I am forgetting something else? O'well, I will just have to wait and see...

Not sure what you want to know about the inside, but after I cut it off the plug I am going to add the rivet nuts for mounting, smooth it out a little bit then put it back together.

I will use the original pattern from AEV paperwork to cut the hood. Everything is made to those specs.

I haven't seen the Rugged Ridge one yet, but I will have to look it up..sounds interesting.
