MY OBX adventure

Re: MY OBX adventure
about the dude in the suburban. he was just envious and thoroughly embarrassed but that is still no excuse; he definitely acted like a dick.
secondly and forgive my ignorance, but where is this place we are talking about. looks pretty cool and worthy of a road trip.

heres my outer banks adventure..
Been going to the outer banks since I was little.. love the place. if you head further south, you can take a free ferry over to Ocracoke island. Nice little village.. grabbed a few beers at this nice little dockside bar and then camped one night at the NPS campground, and took the next ferry over to Cedar island. From there, there's a locally run ferry service that will take you and your vehicle over to Portsmouth island for about 100 bucks(there's also one from Ocracoke but you can't take your Jeep). Portsmouth island is about as isolated as you can get in the outer banks.. there's a few cabins and cottages run by the NPS, but no pavement whatsoever . You can camp right on the beach, which against the law anywhere else in OBX. You are also permitted to build fires on the beach normally, but NC has a fire ban in effect at the moment.
There's also a historical site to visit called Portsmouth Village, but the greenheads were so bad when I got there, I pretty much ran around for 1 minute to get a look and jumped right back in the Jeep. There's an old school house and church I think, but it was a pain in the a$$ to get up there.
Did I mention the fishing is great? I'm no angler, but I threw my pole in the water and caught 4 fish in the first hour. Cooked em up with some cajun seasoning for lunch.. talk about fresh! There's a lot of trails that run through the center of the island where the beach is closed for nesting birds, fun for a little cruise through the dunes but you have to keep your windows up because the greenhead flies are ridiculous. They literally follow you as you drive through the dunes. Nasty SOB's are huge!
Anyways I did have a run in with the park ranger, something having to do with an open container, and "unsafe operation". No DUI though thank God.. but in case anyone goes down there, don't be an idiot like me and drive down the beach half plastered..
Other than the $375 in tickets, it was a blast!
