If you like modding plastic, go for it. There is no metal in the rear bumper besides the mounting bracket. I don't know why they even call it a bumper.

Default Chopped rear bumper

I call this my "Yield Sign Mod" After I removed the brackets & cut the ends off, I riveted a yield sign onto the ends to make it look finished.

Did you take the rear bumper off to modify the ends? Or did you just cut it while on?

Thanks Man. It's my first Jeep & I'm loving it.

It's the stock one, no spacer, no adapter. I am trying to eliminate uneccesary weight & expence. IMO,This tire is actually less
stressfull on the tailgate than the stock spare was. In order to close the tailgate now I must lift up, the tire actuall wedges very tightly into the dished out portion of the stock rear bumper, thus distributing mush of the tire weight onto the bumper itself AND eliminating up & down movement. I try not to leave the gate open for extended periods when I'm out. In the garage I have a 2x4 cut just right to wedge under the tire when hanging with the gate open.

I just cut it off while mounted. I used a wood handsaw for most of the cutting, however, you have to drill a hole to turn the corner & use a skinney pointed drywall saw on the top. To match the front part of the bumper I left an extra 2 inches of plastic on the top part sticking out. I then heated it up with a torch & bent it 90 degres to match the contour of the front. This way you have a nice uniform platform to rivet on your end plate. Hope this helps & makes a little sence.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Thanks again. I designed it & welded it up. It slides into the hitch therfore prohibiting use of the end gate while it's installed. Really not a big deal for me. I just have to remember to remove my rear cubby cover when I use the can rack so I can access my recovery goodies there.
