I am not sure how else you would really do it with out a winch. Its easy to critique sitting at home. I think they did just fine. I doubt the camera gives a very good perspective on the safety. Sounds like they were doing a decient job spotting. Even waited for the horses to get out of the way.

If there was a better way with the equipment they had lets hear it...
