Default looking for help.

I built a rear bumper w/ tire carrier. I would like the swing out carrier to be connected to the tail gate. The problem is the tire carrier swings so much that if I'm not paying attention the tire will smack my fender. I was thinking some kind of tie rod w/heim joint. Any ideas?

My bumper/tire carrier from MORE has a tie rod between the tire carrier and the tailgate. There's a mounting plate where the spare tire holder was that has a mounting point for the tie rod. It has two heim joints that thread together to adjust the preload on rubber bushings also installed on the mounting plate.

Here's a pic:

The tire carrier also has a spring-loaded stop mechanism that holds the tailgate open and also prevents it from opening too far. You may want to look into doing something similar; I find it incredibly handy.

Good luck, and great work so far!

Thank you for the response. That what I will probably end up doing.

No problem. If you want any other pictures or anything, let me know. I checked out mcmaster.com earlier when I was thinking of making my own linkage, and they have a pretty good selection of tie rods/heim joints.

Good luck!

Micah
