Default holy crap this was scary

Driving down a 4 lane with both kids in the back. My 8 months pregnant wife was driving (memorial day weekend, had a few). We both felt something was off, so we stopped and i took a look around. Unfortunately I didn't think to check the lugs. The rear driver side wheel sheered off going about 45. She did a great job and got us safely to the shoulder, and thankfully no one else was hurt. The wheel traveled about 500 yards, across oncoming traffic before it came to rest.

Now for the analytical part. How in the hell did this happen? I took the jeep in about a month ago for a rotate and balance. I have not gone offroading one time since then.

I'll bet some kid at the shop was new an dident torque your wheels to spec. Or did halfthe job and went to lunch and forgot to finish putting them on.

Glad your family is safe. You owe the wife some flowers!

$1000 deductible, so doubt it. Hoping I just need a new rotor and that the axle isn't bent. With the holiday weekend though, won't know anything until Tuesday. And I need it back by Thursday as we are driving up the the mtns to meet our builder.

no changes since balance and rotate a month or so ago. Been running this wheel and tire package for 2 years.

now I will say this. About a 18 months ago this same wheel had loose lugs. I heard it driving to the car wash after a HEAVY offroading trip in lots of mud and muck. But no issues since I tightened them.

Damn thats pretty odd that it's taken so long to work loose. Really must have been on loose enough that enough hot/cold cycles it worked itself loose.
