Did anything else give besides the axle shaft? The teeth look like they didn't slip either. That's crazy!!

It is unbelievable that the differential gears were not damaged.

Obviously you would prefer the U-joint to fail since it is easier and cheaper to replace, but next best thing is the axle itself to protect the gears.

Were the wheels slipping at all or were they locked down in traction?
