My true appreciation for a spotter came at the Valley of Fire a few years ago... WOL and WOLette lead me through the S-turn even though it was an optional obstacle that only two attempted.
It takes a lot to learn the skills of spotting. Observe, learn, and practice....
I have done my share of observing through some pretty rough terrain ( 2x JKX , MOAB, Florence Junction, Chili Challenge, Johnson Valley) and now feel comfortable and confident enough to take on the role.
Thanks to Mel, Clifton, Ryan, Eddie, Cindy, Chris (Full Traction), Doug, Jen, Jeff and all my other friends along they way.
Especially to all the newbies in my groups for listening to yours truly at Shamrocked my past 4 years as a trail leader.

I think all of these pics are rated NSFW (Not Safe For Wife)... I can only imagine the grief I would get if she saw these and knew I was taking my boys out on runs. Actually, in my case, it would be my mom/their grandmother giving me the grief. lol

I hear you Jake!
On our first newbie run, the one we now call Shamrock Newbie Run, you and Fish and Toad and Bullfrog all helped us out so it's like giving back now for us to help out. Karma baby!
Memories from our first forum run:
It was pretty damn hot in the triple digits but Eddie (WOL) spotted all 30+ jeeps through the canyon.
Then right when we had thought we made it you guys tell us there's one more obstacle (sort of a rite of passage) that we all must do (no by-pass) to complete the run...it was called Graduation Hill and for good reason. Here's the view I had as Eddie said it'll be a piece of cake for you don't worry about it...well I learned pucker factor that day but all went as I was told and no worries...point is if you have the right spotter it's a piece of cake! Thanks all for helping us to burst our cherry that day and we made some great new friends along the way!
