Default OR FAB tire/can broken

On November 26 of last year I bought my OR-FAB tire/can from an official domestic reseller (4WeelTeam) where I am. From printed instructions and learning from our Write-ups the OR-FAB tire/can was installed (thanks to brent_f70) on January 25, making some improvements on February 28 (thanks to Dr McNinja).

My JK is my daily car and everything was well on road and offroad until July 16th when I was driving on the highway and by the rear mirror I saw a rare balancing movement in the tire. When it was available I stopped and checked the tire and then I saw that my OR-FAB tire/can was broken!!

I went to my home took some pictures of broken pieces also the dented tailgate and finally removed the structure. Really I do not know what happened it; I used my OR-FAB tire/can on offroad several times without any troubles.

Is there someone with a similar issue???

I reported this to 4WheelTeam people and they told me that they will talk to OR-FAB people.

Sorry for an extensive text but I wanted use it to say thanks again to everyone who helped me with good advices.

I agree... along with heat stress from the amps being too high during welding. There was probably a pin-hole leak in the weld which allowed water to build up and rust through the metal. I have seen water get through 2 layers of paint, 1 layer of primer, and 3 welds, which ended up rusting a steel door out of a ship.

Thanks. Some days after the OR-FAB tire/can broke I had contact with OR-FAB people. I sent these and more pictures to them. After them studied the pictures they told me that the structure broke because the adapter to change to JK bolt pattern (showed in picture) put a great stress on the structure. I do not think so that because my spare tire (34”) always was resting against the structure like it easy to see in a picture.

Here are other pictures

Man this is the tire carrier I was looking at getting because you don't need to buy a new bumper, but if they jerk you around like this, there is no way I'm getting one. I'm a welder and that adapter b.s. is the biggest copout I've ever heard. Anything could have happened. I think it was brought on by the stress of the bend though

DAMN..... Made me so nervous I went out to check mine...And thanks for the shout out ....anyway no rust spots or apparent damage on mine??

And mine is holding a very heavy Krawler 37.....really disappointed in their answer. I met the owner at the last Easter Jeep Safari and I have to say He really seems like a stand-up guy.

Hey JkMoses,

Before I bought my Or-Fab tire carrier I did alot of research on it. I spoke to more than five owners of TJ's and two owners of YJ's. Not one person I spoke to ever had any issues with their carrier. Other than powdercoat chipping.

I would try and talk to Yates with Or-Fab and see what he suggest. I found him to be a No Bullshit kind of guy.........

Maybe it's a defect from Or-Fab, and maybe it's not. Either way, I belive Yates will be up front with you and come up with a solution.

Please let us know how you make out. Good luck.

Not saying that it is a good excuse....but did your tire rest against the tubes like in this pic? I think that if it was not resting against the tube the additional leverage and weight caused by the distance combined with the vibrations from bumps could cause more stress on your welds than mine does....but as already mentioned....doesn't seem like it should have caused it to fail???
