you all raise some good points about the weight being farther out....but thats why I figured to use a double hinge. I like the idea of mounting the tire on an angle though...I'll work on some other awesome sketches

The or fab can only hold up to a 35 though, it's cause its body mounted. I'm lookin to build something a little stronger. The lod bumper unfinished w/o carrier is the base platform I'm gonna start with though.

Have you takin any measurments to see if ur design even works??? It seem that if you mounted the jerry can as close to the body as possible that ur tire wouldn't be to far out and as long as u use some good bearings I think if would be fine. Do you have access to a machine shop?? If so I would recommend machining a tube to fit axle bearing from the front of a rear wheel drive truck or van. Think about how much weight those have to support. The bearings from a Ford E150 are about the right size. Make some sweet ass gussets around the tube where the axle bearings are and mabee even overkill it by using 1/4" plate for that side of the bumper( or the whole thing) and tie it strait to the frame. member there could be additional stress on it from coming off a rock face a draging the tire of bumper or just trail vibrations.
