I am told that WCMs cannot be reused.
They must be new.
They only wanted to replace the shifter because it was dirty, and you could hear/feel grit when shifting, and it caused it to hold my keys in the column.
Don't know what a clockspring is.

The clocksping is inside the steering colum. It is the wiring that allows you to have a horn and airbag but still turn the steering wheel. It does other stuff too, but it is esentially a wiring harness that lets you turn the wheel without it wadding up or breaking (in theory). I could be wrong about that, so someone step in if I am. Some guys had them break, and I think it messed with the computer knowing if the wheel was straight. Caused ESP/BAS/ABS issues. i think

#2 is the clockspring. It's going to be somewhere under the steering wheel.
If you look here, I think a pic of it is between step 8 and 9.
Cruise Control Write-up.
If it were me, knowing that I was going to have to replace it anyway, I would try to get it open so I could clean it first. It's not like there's going to be a core charge, so what have you got to lose? If it doesn't work, you were going to have to buy a new one, anyway. If by chance you're able to get it open and clean it, even if you have to use duct tape to hold it back together, you've saved a bunch of money.
I'm rootin for ya, man. Looks like you're beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Let's just hope no one else sits down.
