You're getting closer Crash. The Tonka will live again. I know it.

This may sound a little stupid, but Tonka was underwater for a long time, you may have water (at this point maybe dried mud) plugging your exhaust. Have you pulled it and checked yet? That would cause the motor to backfire/smoke/make awful noise as the exhaust pressure builds and tries to escape back up into the engine thru the cylinders.
